Museo Del Esparto De Archena

Located in the basement of the Palacete de Villarrías, we can find the Esparto Museum, where we can enjoy contemplating pieces made of esparto grass and replicas of buildings of Archena such as the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Castle of D. Mario among others and also, farming tools and tools of our orchard archenera (a threshing machine, a Murcian well etc.). Some archaeological studies affirm that esparto grass was used in prehistoric times in the Region of Murcia, although it was the Romans who promoted this industry located, among other regions, in Murcia. Although the preparation and plaiting of esparto grass is nowadays mainly carried out in large factories in an industrial way, there are still small artisans who continue the tradition, a clear example of which can be seen in this Museum in Archena.
